Black Canyon Coffee at Centrepoint

Yet another foreign franchise coming into this food-loving country of ours. Black Canyon Coffee, a relatively new player in the already competitive food industry in Malaysia. Originated from Thailand, where it has established itself as one of the leading restaurant-chain, now they can be found all over South East Asia.

Today I drove to Centrepoint in Bandar Utama together with Kevin and Eileen. Decided to eat here since I wanted to go to Canaanland to buy Planetshakers' latest album, Never Stop. Was walking around to decide where to have our lunch when I stumbled upon this restaurant. After browsing the menu for awhile, we decided to try them out.

The restaurant's design & deco looks impressive, with some uber-cool bar and open-kitchen concept (like the rest of new restaurants in this city). The waiters were pretty attentive, and friendly, and we were further impressed when we saw the menus. I said menuS because there are 2 separate menus, one of the food, and the other for coffee/drinks.

The design and layout of the menus are truly creative and attractive. The menus are fashioned to look and feel like magazine (or like a photo album?), hence the colours and the nice pictures. The food's description are written with some rather "questionable" English, might be because it is translated straight from their original Thai menu maybe?

They also include description of ingredients and rices in the menu, apparently to show how healthy their food is.

Anyway, choosing your meal might be a lengthly affair here. There are a huge selections to opt from. From Western food to different Eastern one's. You can find dozens type of rice dishes, noodles, and even steaks. But majority of it would be some sort of Thai Fusion food.

They do offer set lunches/dinners to make your decision-making process much shorter and easier. The sets offer good value-for-money, and they add in an Ice Lemon Tea (worth RM4.50++) or Mini Tom Yum Soup and a scoop of ice cream, for just a little bit extra money.

About 5-8 minutes after ordering, the drinks and the soup arrived promptly. The Ice Lemon Tea looked very refreshing, but the Mini Tom Yum Soup looked very mini indeed.

The Tom Yum Soup is definitely tasty, but not enough kick to it. And it looked pretty bland with only a couple of corianders and some needle mushrooms.

Then the mains are served as well. First up was Kevin's Spaghetti With Chicken Ham (RM9.90++ Set, with Ice Lemon Tea). The portion is not very big, but it sure looked good. At first glance, it does look like Mee Goreng, but one bite into it you can definitely taste the tomato-based sauce. The ingredients used are similar to Mee Goreng's though, such as capsicum, onion, tomato, egg and green peas.

Next was my Rice With Roasted Chicken & Mixed Vegetables (RM9.90++ individually, or RM12.95++ set with Mini Tom Yum & Ice Cream). When it arrived on our table, we all agreed that the dish's presentation is very nice and neat. I like this alot, as I am someone who loves to eat rice with delicious gravy. This particular dish comes with 2 different kinds of gravy. The mushroom sauce is from the roasted chicken, while the Cantonese-styled gravy comes from the vege. The vege tasted fresh, and the roasted chicken tasted delicious, and the texture is just nice. Two thumbs up for this!

Eileen ordered this Thai signature dish, Pad Thai (RM10.90++). Another dish that comes with impressive presentation. Some ingredients such as the beansprouts, chilli flakes, and oddly some sugar, are put aside instead of mixing it with the rice noodle. Eileen couldn't finish this (as usual ), so I happily did her a big favor by sapu-ing it clean. Both of us agreed that although its delicious, and not too dry, we have definitely tasted better ones (especially when we were in Adelaide). It tasted more sweet than spicy, although some people might prefer it this way. They are very generous with the amount of prawn they put it though.

We finished off the lunch with ice creams for dessert. Kevin had the Mocha Chips Ice Cream (RM6.50++), while I had my scoop of chocolate ice-cream that comes with the set lunch. Both tasted nice, and of good quality. Like heaven and earth if you compare them with those served at places like Restoran Talipon.

This was the total damage for our lunch. Reasonable price for this sort of restaurant I would say. Although it would be much better if the portion of the meals are bigger.

I will surely visit Black Canyon again, as there are many more choices to try. And I will choose to believe them, that their food is healthy and its good for me! Like what they said on their plates, I wanna eat their Good Food, so that I can have Good Health and Good Life (*brainwashed*).

The Pad Thai I had in Bangkok was also sweet. Don't quite like it, luckily the one your fren ordered, the sugar was put aside.

preciouspea: Yea, I guess they make it milder so that it appeals to the mass consumers. What a bummer. I expects mega hot food when I goes to Thai restaurants, don't you?

limmeiyen: You've have recommended countless eateries to us, so you're most welcome!
