| | Was very eager to try out a restaurant reviewed recently by xiulongbao. After showing pictures of the food there to my colleagues, it was not that hard to convince them to make that place our lunch target later.
Did a simple search on Google and with the help of Google Earth, it was not difficult to locate the bistro. It is actually operating in a bungalow just opposite the Sekolah Keb. 1 Sultan Alam Shah. Parking can be a tricky affair if you come late, as there are limited parking spaces in this residential area.
At first I thought something is amiss as the restaurant looked empty. The waiter promptly welcomed us and ushered us into a hall/room in the bungalow.
There are about 7 tables in there and all except the one reserved for us were occupied. The first thing you will noticed is the decorations in that restaurant. From the flowers and little marbles on the table, to the candle holders by the windows, they seems to put quite some effort in making the place cosier and nice. There are also quite a number of paintings on the wall, apparently the owner of the bistro, Ariff Awaluddin, is a big fan of local arts. Another prominent thing you will noticed is their logo, the Native American's deity of fertility, known as Kokopelli of course. You can find it on their menu, windows, and even all over the courtyard's floor! The drinks came quite promptly after ordering, and all of us were very satisfied with them. Almost all drinks there are priced at below RM10, including the fresh fruit juices which seems to be quite popular here as almost all tables ordered one at least. After waiting excitedly for about 15 minutes, the signature dish of the bistro finally came. The owner Ariff are famous for his Char Kuey Teow (RM8.90), and have built a sizeable fan base since his days in Royal Selangor Club as well as Uncle Don restaurant in Sri Hartamas. True to the hypes, this Char Kuey Teow received seal of approvals from all of us. The taste is just oh-so-good and very very similar to the version you can find in the sacred homeland of CKT, Penang itself. It is full of "wok hei" and slightly more spicy than usual CKTs.
We found the New Zealand Lamb (RM20.90) here up to our standard too. Although Kevin's medium rare was a tad too rare, my request for medium was done almost to perfection. They did re-do the lamb for Kevin with a complimentary corn for him, to their credits.
Served with two huge pieces of lamb, there are three types of sauce to go with it, namely black pepper, mushroom and BBQ. It also comes with side dishes such as the mayo potatoes, bun with butter, corn and some vegetables. Even a big eater like me had some tough time finishing everything, so definitely worth the money. There is a huge selections of pasta too, but we only got to try the Seafood Aglio Olio (RM18.90). This yummy-looking pasta is served with steamed mussels, shrimps, calamaries and other imgredients such as chillies, garlics and corianders. Not outstanding but tasty nevertheless. The bistro also serves several types of desserts, but we were too full to check them out that day. No alcohol is at offer at this place, the most you can get are some sparkling juices. If it is not too hot or if I come at night, I might want to try doing al-fresco there as the courtyard seems very nice, with the little lanterns on the table and wooden floor. Food quality, service, ambience and presentation are the main factors that I will look for in any place I go for food. And Kokopelli passed all of those with flying colours I must say, especially considering their reasonable pricing. The owner also insists on using just local produces and ingredients, so there's another reason to support them instead of some foreign's franchise eateries. Need I say more?
